Bridging the Lab and the Land: SMACOL’s Senior Five Biologists Explore NARL-Kawanda

At St. Mary’s College Lugazi (SMACOL), we believe that biology is not a subject to be contained within the four walls of a laboratory; it is a living, breathing science that sustains our nation. In a move to bring the Senior Five curriculum to life, our budding biologists recently embarked on a transformative field expedition to the National Agricultural Research Laboratories (NARL) in Kawanda.

This visit was more than just a school trip; it was a deep dive into the heart of Uganda’s agricultural innovation, designed to bridge the gap between theoretical genetics, botany, and the practical realities of food security.

Upon arrival at the sprawling Kawanda facility, the students were ushered into the world of Biotechnology and Tissue Culture. For many, “tissue culture” was merely a definition in their S.5 notebooks. However, seeing the sterile growth chambers where thousands of disease-free banana plantlets are generated from a single meristem was an “aha!” moment.

The researchers at the National Agricultural Research Organization (NARO) explained how they combat the Banana Xanthomonas Wilt (BXW) and other pests that threaten Uganda’s staple food. The students observed the precision required in the inoculation rooms, gaining a firsthand understanding of cellular totipotency—a core concept in their current biology syllabus.

The journey continued to the Soil and Plant Analysis laboratories. Here, the students were introduced to the chemistry of the earth. They learned how soil pH, nutrient levels, and microbial activity dictate the health of a crop. This segment of the trip was particularly impactful, as it connected Biology to Chemistry and Geography, showing the students that scientific disciplines do not exist in isolation.

Watching the NARL scientists use advanced equipment like the Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer gave our students a glimpse into the professional world of research. It sparked conversations about career paths in Agro-ecology and Environmental Science, proving that a background in Biology opens doors far beyond traditional medicine.

One of the highlights of the visit was the Food Biosciences and Agribusiness department. The Senior Five class was fascinated by the value-addition technologies being developed at Kawanda. From fortifying foods with Vitamin A to developing solar-drying techniques for fruits, the students saw how biology is used to reduce post-harvest losses and fight malnutrition.

This exposure aligns perfectly with the New Lower Secondary Curriculum values which emphasize vocational relevance and problem-solving. Our students were challenged to think like entrepreneurs: How can we use our knowledge of enzymes and fermentation to create commercial products?

The S.5 biology trip to Kawanda is a staple of the SMACOL experience because it fosters critical thinking. Seeing the National Gene Bank, where Uganda’s plant biodiversity is preserved for future generations, instilled a sense of responsibility in the students. They left Kawanda not just with better notes on “Plant Anatomy,” but with a vision of how they can contribute to the scientific advancement of their country.

As St. Mary’s College Lugazi continues to produce top-tier results in the sciences, such experiential learning remains our secret weapon. We are not just teaching students to pass exams; we are nurturing the researchers, geneticists, and agricultural engineers of tomorrow.

The Senior Five biology class returned to Lugazi with dirty boots and ignited minds. This trip to NARL-Kawanda served as a powerful reminder that the diagrams they draw in their books are the blueprints for Uganda’s future. We extend our gratitude to the staff at NARO for hosting us and to our dedicated Biology department for organizing such a high-value academic excursion.
